A fishing report from Jardines de la Reina - April 2005
Yesterday report: the tarpon season is definitely begin, better than last year. Today, the 10th of April Jardines de la Reina 9 fishing skiffs with 16 anglers hooked a total of 79 tarpon, caught one of 100 lbs, 2 of 90 lbs, 10 in the 50/70 lbs range. All proper sight casting in the spectacular crystal waters of Jardines de la Reina. One boat hooked 25 tarpon in one day. Landed 9 of them. One tarpon of approximately 140 lbs was hooked, but not landed. Add to this 89 bonefish, 3 nearly caught permits and several other fish not including the night fish and you get. Very good fishing today for all.
Some of the best fly fishing in the world can be found at the Tortuga, a floating hotel located in the Bay of Anna Maria. The facility will house up to 30 fishermen or scuba divers. This is the area that we opened with American fishermen in 1980. Many Americans know it as the Last Paradise Keys. Canadians know it as the Gardens of the Queen and officially is is Jardines de la Reina. Fishing has been excellent with great tarpon fishing, bone fishing is always great and a number of anglers getting the Grand Slam (bonefish, tarpon and permit). With hundreds of miles of flats to fish, and very few angers, the bonefish are plentiful and easy to catch. The average sized bonefish are about 3-5 pounds with many being caught in the 7 to 10 pound range. The boats are excellent as is the food and the Italian managers are lots of fun. Price ranges from $1900 on the Halcon to $2400 for the Tortuga or $2900 for the Halcon per person for a week long trip plus the cost of getting to the city of Jucaro, Ciego de Avila.
